How Much Bandwidth Do I Need For My Website
As you start searching for a hosting package to fit your needs, you might find it hard to find the right package. This could be due to a lack of understanding what you really need. Often, bandwidth is the hardest thing to predict and understand. However, with a few steps, you can figure out How Much Bandwidth you need for your website(s).
What is Bandwidth?
Bandwidth is the actual amount of data transferred through your website at one specific time. If you don’t have enough bandwidth, your website may load slower, which can cause other issues. With not enough bandwidth, you could make your website unavailable to potential visitors.Every web site owner will ask How Much Bandwidth Do I Need, This is a very open question.
The one huge misunderstanding is bandwidth versus data transfer. They are not the same thing. Data transfer is the actual amount of data transferred whenever your website is loaded. However, bandwidth is the vehicle used for the transmission.
Calculating your Bandwidth Needs
Before we actually get into the formula used to calculate bandwidth, it’s important to note that having more than enough bandwidth is better than not enough. It can be hard to predict spikes in website activity and having extra bandwidth can ensure you don’t lose any of your visitors because of slow load times.
Estimating your bandwidth needs is done with a simple formula:
Page Size X ##Visitors X ##Pages = Daily Bandwidth Needs
So, if the average size of a page/post on your website is 40KB, you would plugin 40KB for the first part of the formula. The second part is the number of visitors you receive on an average day. Let’s assume you receive 100 visitors per day, so this goes in the second part of the formula. We will also assume that each visitor looks at 3 pages, so our formula looks like this:
40KB X 100 Visitors X 3 Pages = 12,000KB
This formula gives us the daily bandwidth need of 12,000KB. However, what happens if you have a day that 200 people visit your website and they view an average of 4 pages each? This would give you a much higher daily average. Does your website just load slow or not at all?
The answer to this question is no, if you’re smart enough to get a web hosting package with more bandwidth than your basic needs. Most web hosting companies calculate bandwidth on a monthly basis, so the average amount you need per day can vary a little bit. However, it’s far better to have more than you need.
With the example above, we can work the equation out to a monthly bandwidth need by multiplying 12,000KB by 30. This gives us a monthly need of 360,000KB of bandwidth. This calculates out to 0.360 GB of bandwidth.
Since most hosting packages include 1GB of bandwidth or more, you will be just fine. However, your needs may vary, depending on your average number of visitors, size of your pages and the average number of pages viewed.
After doing your own calculation, you will be able to find the right hosting package for your specific needs. Along with calculating the amount of bandwidth you need, it’s important to find a hosting company that will allow you to buy more bandwidth, when necessary.
Maybe your business has a busy season, such as the holiday shopping season or you’re growing. If this is the case, you may need to be able to buy extra bandwidth during your busy season. As you shop for the right hosting package, make sure you can expand your bandwidth as your needs change.
