Vbulletin is an excellent, powerful and completely customizable package used for building forum site worldwide. Today, we present a tutorial on How to Setup Vbulletin.
Vbulletin is written in PHP, which is the world’s fastest growing language for scripting. PHP is complemented by the most efficient and fastest database engine which is built by MySQL. Vbulletin is the perfect community solution to site regardless the size.
How To Setup Vbulletin?
If you want to setup Vbulleting on your site, this tutorial is for you. Here are the step-by-step instructions on how to setup Vbulletin.
Step 1: Download the Software
The Vbulletin software is available and allowed to download from its official website. One thing you should know that this is commercial software and you will have to pay for this. There is no trial version or free version to download and use.
You will find two types of vBulletin license in their website. One is owned and another is leased. For the “owned” license, you will pay and get the ownership of that but in the case of “leased”, you will only get access to the software for a specific time and after the leased period, you will pay again. You will also need a faster and secure hosting option.
Make your purchase choice, create an account and make the software payment.
Step 2: Vbulletin Installation
Once you got a vBulletin license, download the file on your computer. Now, extract the archive by right-clicking on the ZIP file, and clicking Extract All.
The extracted file will have two folders: do_not_upload and upload as the image above. This is how you prepare the package for transfer on Windows. For iOS, locate the ZIP file on the computer and double-click. The file will be extracted to the location of the ZIP file.
Now, you have to upload these folders in your hosting account. Before that you will have to select the destination where you want to install it. If you want to use your site only for forum, then upload the contents in the folder named public_html in your account.
Use a FTP to transfer the files to the hosting server. Every web hosting account gives you access to FTP.
Step 3: SQL Database Creation
Once the files are uploaded via FTP, the next step in how to setup Vbulletin is to create the MySQL database. Login to your cPanel and click on the MySQL database icon.
Clicking that you will be taken to the database manager. Now you will have to create the database on the name of ‘vbtest’. For installation, this name will be asked so be careful.
Creating the vbtest database site, you will have to name a username and password for accessing the database. During the installation you will be asked to fill the database name but the password will not be changed.
Now you have successfully created the database and your desired username for accessing the database. After you click on Create User, the next step involves giving privileges to the database user. We recommend to apply All Privileges for the vBulletin script to work perfectly.
Now, go ahead for further instruction.
Step 4: Installing Database
At this step, you already have uploaded the files, created the database and now the time is for filling the database details in the cPanel. To do this, go to the cPanel and click on File Manager.
Cpanel’s directory file manager can be browsed clicking the icons. Reaching the folder, click on the config.php.new file option to see this started.
Click on Edit for customizing the page. Editing this file is considered the most important task of installing vBulletin. Edit the upload/core/includes/config.php file and enter your database details, created in the previous step of this tutorial. You only need to edit the dbname, username and password fields for a clean installation of the script.
Step 5: Configuring vBulletin to Work with the Database
As the vBulletin application is ready to be launched, open the web browser you use to do this. You will navigate to http://example.test/vb/core/install/install.php. If everything you did earlier was correct then you will find a window where you will have to provide your customer information. The vBulletin configuration panel will appear.
Type the database credentials created in the previous step and click on Create Files.
If you can provide the correct number, then it will take you to the nine installation steps.
vBulletin Configuration Steps
#1 Click on Next and it will take you to the verify configuration page.
#2 Click on the next installation button and go ahead. If everything goes well then you will see the message of successful connection and existence of your database.
#3 For further setup, click on Next button.
#4 If the tables were successfully created then it will take you to the step four where the default database variables and encoding will be set up.
#5 You will insert the data as sample in the tables.
#6 You will have to select the language which is in default English.
#7 This step will import the theme of the default vBulletin through the auto installer. Going further, it will import the help files for the administrator.
#8 This is the step where you will have to provide the detail of your forum such as the title of the forum and the page title. You can also change your administrator’s email address. It will be better for you to leave the cookie setting blank as it can make you unable to log in to your own forum if any setting gets wrong.
#9 Provide your desired administrator username, password and email for further access and proceed.
After finishing, open your cPanel and go the directory where the files were uploaded. Now, enter the directory Install removing the file install.php as this is a mandatory.
This was the process of vBulletin installation. Hope you will find your answers and be able to build your own forum.
