Review Summary

Updated: January 7, 2023

InMotion Hosting is an overall feature-packed and user-friendly hosting service. Their asking prices range from very affordable to a little higher than average, but their value is usually more than worth the subscription costs. They have good security, excellent customer support, and a plethora of options for big and small online websites or businesses alike. Their only main downside is that their data centers are located exclusively on the East and West Coasts of the United States, so international traffic may suffer slightly by comparison.

InMotion Hosting’s shared hosting plans are highly inclusive, it comes with a bunch of useful features and makes for a great choice if you’re looking to host a basic static website or even a small eCommerce store. Even better, they’re also more affordable than most competitors’ shared hosting plans, without sacrificing resources or hosting features. Renewal rates also don’t dramatically jump in price after your first term, which is a rarity in the hosting industry and something we can appreciate.

This, combined with excellent 24/7 customer support across a variety of channels, can make Inmotion a great hosting solution for most customers.

Plans

There are three shared hosting plans available: LaunchPower, and Pro. With the main difference between them being the number of server resources, you’ll be allocated. The higher the plan, the better it is for multiple websites, and the more CPU and RAM usage you’ll be allocated. Pretty standard, we’d have to say.

Each of the plans has a host of standard features, including unlimited email accounts and unlimited bandwidth. Note that this unlimited bandwidth is copied across the industry, and it’s not truly unlimited; it just means that you can use as many resources as is reasonable without stepping on the toes of other clients on your shared server.

You also get automatic WordPress updates, automatic daily backups to save your progress or data in the event of a server crash, advanced server caching for faster data transfer to your visitors, and SSH, FTP, and PHPMyAdmin Access. All of these features are standard with most hosting providers, but they are useful. Free restore for your backed up website included as well; this feature is not included with every shared hosting provider, so it’s a good advantage.

Furthermore, you get a free, no-downtime website transfer service with every plan you choose. This allows you to seamlessly transfer your site to InMotion Hosting’s servers and. It includes up to three cPanel accounts, and also allows you to transfer your email accounts, databases, and domains. Once you pass these freebies, there’s a $10 charge for every additional item you want to transfer. InMotion Hosting is also clear that websites over 5 G.B. total might be subject to additional transfer costs and longer time frames. However, they also let you pay a one-time $30 fee to have your transfer request pushed to the top of the queue if you need to speed things along.

You additionally get a free domain or a domain transfer once you sign up. This eventually rises to $15.99 after your first year, which is a bit more expensive compared to other shared hosting providers. However, we really like the fact that you don’t have to claim this domain on sign-up. Instead, the free domain comes in the form of a credit you can use at your discretion.

The Pro plan advertises a special level of support (aptly titled “Pro Level Support”). However, this doesn’t necessarily translate to better customer service than you would otherwise get. Instead, it lets you contact InMotion Hosting’s customer support to check your physical uptime once every 30 day period. This lets you examine whether it’s within the 99.999% guarantee InMotion Hosting provides. If it’s not, you get one month of credit to your account. However, this monitoring has to be done with InMotion Hosting’s internal sensors; you can’t use a third-party monitor. Ultimately, this benefit is a little misleading but still useful.

All plans also include Inmotion’s “Max Speed Zone” feature, which allows you to select between two data centers (Los Angeles or Washington) from which to host your site. In short, It’s a good perk if you run an online business that primarily gets traffic from these areas and can provide increased site performance. However, the prevalence of Content Delivery Networks (CDN) makes this a little less useful than it otherwise would be. What’s more, other shared hosting providers offer data centers across various countries, let alone within the U.S.

More importantly, each InMotion Hosting shared hosting plan offers free SSL certification. This is standard with most hosts but is nonetheless useful. It’s an essential part of hosting that ensures your site is secure when accessed by customers and has some SEO benefits as well. Finally, the shared hosting plans come with access to a free website builder called BoldGrid. This is a pretty good deal all in all, as it has a modern and intuitive interface that easily beats many other free website builders out there. It includes several modern WordPress templates and an easy to understand drag-and-drop functionality. Note that BoldGrid is only supported on WordPress, though this isn’t likely to be a problem given how many shared hosting users already use WordPress.

Pricing

InMotion Hosting provides its shared hosting plans at reasonable prices: regularly $7.99, $9.99, and $15.99 per month for each plan. Their renewal rates are also a little cheaper than most other hosting providers.

They also offer a 90-day money-back guarantee for all of their business hosting packages. This is longer than most other guarantees from other providers. However, you have to sign up for a six month or longer-term to qualify for this guarantee.

This isn’t a problem since you can only purchase these shared hosting plans in one or two-year options; there is no month-to-month payment option. This is a bit limiting, as many other shared hosting providers let you pay on a per month basis.

Final Thoughts

InMotion Hosting’s shared hosting plans are a viable option for beginners to website hosting or building, thanks in large part to the server resources and features, and free SSL certification included with every plan. Overall, their pricing model is affordable and user-friendly, and customers may appreciate reasonable renewal rates.

Shared WordPress hosting is quite similar to regular shared hosting, but it comes with additional WordPress-specific improvements and upgrades.

Overview

InMotion Hosting’s WordPress hosting options are a great choice through and through for serious bloggers or freelancers looking to run a small online business. The WordPress plans come with managed support; this means that InMotion Hosting helps you manage your server and takes care of software updates and security monitoring for you, allowing you to dedicate your time to more worthwhile pursuits.

The plans also come with site setup, including automatic WordPress installation. Several of the features included in the plans make it easy to create new WordPress sites if you want to expand your blog network. Each plan allows you to easily upgrade your resources as well, so you aren’t locked into a slow site if you experience a sudden uptick in growth.

Plans

The first InMotion Hosting WordPress hosting plans include WP-1000S, WP-2000SWP-3000S, and WP-4000S. As with the shared hosting plans, most of these have the same excellent features and values and mostly differ based on their resource packages and the number of websites it can support.

The storage included in each of these plans is comparatively less when you look at what other WordPress hosting providers offer. Even the SSD storage isn’t quite impressive, considering most other hosts offer it for cheaper prices. One other downside, the number of MySQL databases you’ll be able to host is less than some competitor plans.

However, each of these plans is quite scalable; you can eventually double your available resources up to the VPS limits, making the most of the shared hosting format. You can also make any resource upgrade requests directly via your client panel, so it’s fast and easy when you need to boost your website’s capabilities in short order.

InMotion Hosting will take care of any security updates or software updates necessary to keep your WordPress site up and running. This is great, as WordPress has had difficulties with security in the past. They have a dedicated hack and malware prevention system that can scan and catch any files that are vulnerable to malware.

The Total UpKeep Plugin also automates your plug-in and theme updates. Plus, it performs some other functions as well, like rollback to previous versions if there are any errors or schedule backups to occur before every update.

Furthermore, each of the WordPress managed hosting plans come with free website transfersInMotion Hosting does charge a small fee if you migrate more than three websites or databases or more than 10 GB of data.

We’d point out that the WP-2000S plan and above all include a premium subscription to the well-known Jetpack WordPress plug-in. This comes with a host of WordPress specific upgrades and functionalities, including CDN performance-boosting, extra security, extra backup features, and even additional themes or ways to customize your site. Jetpack can also provide you with extra data and analysis tools: these could be crucial additions if you want to grow an online business.

Finally, each of InMotion Hosting’s WordPress plans utilizes their custom “WordPress Hosting Stack.” In a nutshell, it means that each of the plans was created with the best infrastructure, including hardware and software, for WordPress functionality. This means a WordPress plan hosted with one of the servers should run better and faster than what comparable hosting providers can offer. This is much better than what other hosting providers give for WordPress-specific plans. Competitors’ “upgrades” are usually little more than a few extra plug-ins pre-installed with WordPress.

Pricing

The InMotion Hosting WordPress hosting plans are a little costlier than comparative plans from other providers, even when you take regular discounts into account. Prices range between $8.99 per month up to $32.99 per month.

This being said, most of the plans include Jetpack (you get the paid version, rather than the free version as most other providers offer), and they also come with the site builder that the other shared hosting plans have (BoldGrid). This adds some more value for money and makes the price you end up paying fairly reasonable when considering what’s included. You can purchase these plans in one or two-year terms, and each of the plans also comes with a full 90-day money-back guarantee as described earlier.

Final Thoughts

InMotion Hosting’s managed WordPress hosting plans are quite valuable and come with plenty of features and functionality to make them worth their asking prices. They’d be a great choice if you want to run a small online business or maximize your blog network.

Overview

InMotion Hosting’s reseller hosting offerings are excellent both for beginners and experts. Each plan provides a scalable solution that can grow with your business, offering shared environments right up to a virtual private server.

With Data Centers in both Washington DC and Los Angeles, they’re great for dealing with U.S. based clients looking to host a website for their small business. Inmotion also offers a good level of customer support for those new to reselling if you have questions or technical difficulties.

Plans

InMotion Hosting provides Linux based reseller plans, of which there are three shared and three VPS. Each of the plans comes with SSD storage for added speed and flexibility; their RAID 6 data protection is industry-standard but still great to see. Put simply, RAID 6 (which stands for redundant array of independent disks) makes sure that your data is stored on multiple hard disks to improve performance and make sure the server continues to work even if part of it goes down.

In addition, the VPS servers’ SSD drives are enhanced with a proprietary “High Availability” feature. In essence, this replicates the virtual server multiple times so that a copy of the server is ready to take the place of a server that suddenly crashes. It’s redundancy on top of redundancy, and it’s a great feature you’ll want.

Each of the plans provides comparatively more storage and bandwidth than competing hosting providers. They’re only really beaten by plans that offer unlimited or unmetered storage, though, as we’ve covered, such storage is really subject to “unlimited within reason” caveats. InMotion Hosting doesn’t provide a premium CDN, but you can still use Cloudflare via cPanel if required.

Server Management & cPanel Accounts

Speaking of cPanel, all plans also include WHM and WHMCS as standard. For those who aren’t aware, these are the typical server software you’ll find included with most reseller hosting plans. They’re great for both backend management and client billing, working cohesively within cPanel and typically costs $20/month otherwise.

The plans come with between 25 and 80 cPanel accounts, which is more than what other reseller hosting providers offer on average. This gives you lots of leeway when it comes to adding additional clients or customers for your budding reseller business. What’s more, all resources are white-labeled and allow you to configure custom packages for clients, host anonymous private name servers, and create custom-branded themes.

Security

InMotion Hosting doesn’t do badly when it comes to security, either. They offer multilayer site and server protection via Corero and Patchman; the former provides you with comprehensive DDoS protection with scalable security depending on server size, and the latter is an excellent malware hunter and website vulnerability fix-it. Both are included in the price for your reseller package.

Additionally, the VPS reseller plans are managed, meaning that InMotion Hosting takes care of security for your operating system, updates for various software, and monitoring and maintenance are all done for you, allowing you to focus on other aspects of your business.

SSL’s are included, too. You get free COMODO, domain-validated SSL certificates via your cPanel interface. This is distinct from what other hosts provide for free SSL certification; they usually use Let’s Encrypt. Both are equally good when it comes to security and value.

Website backups for your reseller hosting plans are available for an additional fee of $12 every six months. You’ll also get access to InMotion Hosting’s “Snapshot” service, which allows you to create a single backup of the state for your entire website container, including any running processes. You can then immediately restore your website back to that precise point in time. The snapshot back of the store free of charge for up to seven days from the creation date before they are automatically deleted. In the end, it’s an interesting backup innovation.

Finally, InMotion Hosting provides free dedicated I.P. addresses across all of their reseller plans. This provides you with better security, bandwidth, and performance for your clients and you.

Site Migration Support

InMotion Hosting provides an additional benefit in the form of free website transfers for your clients. While these do take a few days, it’s excellent for the value it can provide your clients. Alternatively, you (or your clients) can pay $30 to speed up the process. To make things easier, InMotion Hosting has a selection of detailed articles you can peruse as necessary if you need help setting up and troubleshooting your reseller account, websites, or servers.

Features

Reseller Advantage
Reseller Advantage is an optional service you can take advantage of if you want to begin reselling quickly without spending as much time customizing your servers or configuring your site(s). It can be purchased as a one-time service fee and offers a reselling storefront already built from the ground up. This includes the WordPress based website, and you can choose the template via the BoldGrid website builder we mentioned above. You also get configuration and branding options for WHM and WHMCS, plus an eNom domain reseller account and a positive SSL certification from Comodo for the main site.

Positive SSL certification is a $50 per year value and provides just as much security as free AutoSSL. In fact, it’s even a little better because positive SSL comes with extra insurance if someone does manage to break the encryption.

All in all, it’s an excellent added value and could be a nice choice if you want to effectively bootstrap your reselling business. Be aware that it isn’t included in your 90-day money-back guarantee, and set up takes about two days.

LaunchAssist Service
This is another optional service included with any of the reseller’s plans that R-3000S and above. In a nutshell, it’s an advanced administration service from InMotion Hosting; you can tell them exactly how you want your server set up, and a technical team will take care of the details for you. They can do things like:

  • move your website from your current hosting company to their servers
  • provide launch assistance set up
  • install and optimize your application for maximum performance
  • move your current reseller hosting accounts to their servers
  • and much more

Again, it’s a good way to get your business up and running in a hurry and offers decent value for money if you have a little extra cash to spend.

Pricing

Speaking of cash, InMotion Hosting allows you to purchase these subscription packages for up to two-year options. Monthly rates are a little lower if you sign up for a longer-term upfront, and you get a 90-day money-back guarantee with any of the six or 12-month plans.

Final Thoughts

Altogether, InMotion Hosting’s reseller plans are valuable and versatile, and they’re priced well for what they come with. They offer decent security and server management options, so they’re an ideal choice for reselling businesses that want to provide a good experience for their clients.

Overview

InMotion Hosting’s VPS hosting plans are provided via two data centers located in Washington DC and Los Angeles. Thus, they’re an excellent choice if you have a U.S. online business or primarily get traffic from across the Continental states. InMotion Hosting provides both managed and unmanaged VPS hosting solutions. The managed VPS options include 24/7 live support, launch assistance to help get you started, plus cPanel and WHM support.

Alternatively, the self-managed VPS subscriptions are cheaper but don’t include any GUI software – even cPanel. You’ll need to provide your own, in this case, which may prove to be a bit too technical for most users’ comfort. That being said, one unique feature to Inmotion is that they offer Managed to host for $40/hour on self-managed plans if you ever require support.

Regardless, both options utilize Inmotion’s high availability, high-performance Cloud infrastructure optimized for VPS use. The servers have redundant hardware clusters that both enable faster data transmission between you and your visitors and help ensure that there isn’t any downtime in case of a technical glitch or crash. While this is what you’d typically expect from most VPS providers, it’s still great to have.

Plans

As mentioned, the managed VPS plans include several features/support options to make them worth their higher asking prices. The plans come with between 4, GB, and 8 GB of RAM, with each coming with several terabytes’ worth of bandwidth. Other benefits include unlocked CPU cores for faster simultaneous processing, automated server snapshots, and free site migration.

The managed plans also let you select among various application configuration options (for free) at check out. A LAMP stack is included by default. However, you’ll also have WordPress or PHP configuration options as well, which are said to handle 10x more traffic than LAMP configs. Root access can also be enabled upon request. Overall, this level of flexibility and configuration isn’t readily available from some hosts and can be a great time saver if you already had a certain configuration in-mind. What’s more, you’ll get free launch assistance to make sure your initial setup runs smoothly. Monitoring and software patches are, of course, included.

Secure email, which can be accessed from any device, allows you to send up to 3600 emails per account. You can even set up unlimited email addresses on your account if that suits your business model.

We also want to mention that each of the VPS plans is already optimized for e-commerce platforms like Magento, PrestaShop, and WooCommerce. In essence, this allows you to quickly install these e-commerce platforms with a single click and begin selling your products and online store shortly thereafter. Thus, InMotion Hosting’s VPS plans are a great choice if you want to run an online store scratch or if you want to transfer an online store you’ve already put together from another hosting provider.

Pricing

InMotion Hosting’s VPS price points are pretty fair, particularly for the managed options. Some competing hosting providers do give more storage, bandwidth, and other server resources at similar pricing points.

That being said, InMotion Hosting does have a few additional features that make their VPS hosting subscriptions worthwhile overall. You can also add more cPanel accounts for relatively small fees and configure your servers to your liking; the former can be purchased at checkout. Doing this is recommended since you can get new accounts at heavily discounted rates.

You get a 90-day money-back guarantee with the VPS plans so long as you purchase a six, 12 or 24-month plan at checkout.

Final Thoughts

All in all, InMotion Hosting’s VPS hosting options are effective and valuable despite their slightly higher than average pricing points. They include plenty of features and convenient options, especially if you go with the managed option.

Overview

InMotion Hosting’s dedicated server options come with single and dual-processor SSD’s; this enables you to scale up your server resources as necessary and ensures that your subscription can expand as your business does. The dedicated servers are fully managed and are installed with LAMP stacks, which include Linux, Apache HTTP, MySQL database management software, and PHP, which ensures you have all the foundational stuff needed to host an excellent site. Additionally, all the plans benefit from a dedicated server hosting team that can monitor your server and help you with launch issues that might arise during migration.

Plans

InMotion Hosting’s dedicated hosting plans include EssentialAdvanced, and Elite. Available resources range from 4 G.B. to 32 G.B., and “double RAM promo” periods are quite common, allowing you even greater resources for the same asking prices. You also get different storage amounts depending on your needs, ranging from 500 GB SSD to twin 2 TB HDD.

Ultimately, all the plans are worthwhile, though the higher and more expensive plans are better for larger businesses. Each of the plans comes with free I.P. addresses (5 to 15), as well as free terabytes of data transfer. These I.P. addresses are dedicated, so they provide better security and performance. Each of the plans comes with large RAM options depending on the needs of your application. We also really like that you can select SSD or HDD for your storage depending on whether you want to prioritize performance or higher storage capacity. This practice is fairly standard across the web hosting industry, so InMotion Hosting doesn’t fall behind its competitors.

The upper two plans come with your choice of data center; you can choose between Los Angeles and Washington DC-based on your needs or customer base. Even better, each of the plans also comes with two free hours of managed hosting so you can see the benefits before signing up for the service over the long-term.

InMotion Hosting also provides fully customizable commercial class dedicated servers: ideal options for enterprise needs. These are quite pricey but include storage options ranging from 16 to 64 GB of ECC DDR3 RAM and up to 3 1TB SSD storage. These provide extra high-density memory configurations and have top-tier processors to handle high traffic sites. These latter options also include up to four hours of free managed hosting. They use Intel Xeon E5 Class processors, allowing them to operate even for high demand workloads for larger businesses and enterprise architecture.

Additionally, the commercial plans also provide many more of the same bonuses that the high-performance dedicated servers above give you, like even more free IPs (15 for each plan) and 15 TB of data transfer.

Each of the subscription plans (both customizable and commercial) comes with 99.999% uptime, multilayer defense, and “rebootless” upgrades, meaning software patches will require you to remove your site and forced downtime on your visitors. Speaking of multilayer defense, InMotion Hosting provides several high-performance switches that layer through different APIs and scripts. This alters the routing within the network on-demand, making it that much more difficult for a hacker to breach security and get down into the bones of your site.

The packages are each bolstered by the presence of several top-tier bandwidth providers to keep your servers online, even as Internet traffic fluctuates. The bandwidth providers (a tier 1 network) will automatically swap your server to a different provider if one goes down using InMotion’s smart routing technology. This excellent boost to uptime and server stability is included regardless of the subscription package you choose.

All in all, the dedicated servers on offer here provide speed, flexibility, and scalable resources that will let you build the online business of your dreams. We’re also very impressed by how stable the server packages are likely to be.

Pricing

Pricing for these dedicated server plans is pretty consistent with other offerings across the industry. InMotion Hosting provides discounts a lot, either in terms of direct discounts to the monthly rate or by providing bonuses to their resources.

Specifically, their commercial dedicated hosting plans give you a lifetime discount opportunity. This allows you to save up to $948 annually, depending on the type of plan you choose, and the discount only ends until you close the account with InMotion. Thus, signing up for longer plans will result in you saving more money over time.

The LaunchAssist is another big boost to value for money; you can potentially get up to $300 in value by telling InMotion Hosting what you need for your dedicated servers, and they’ll take care of the rest.

You can take advantage of the 30-day money-back guarantee for each of these plans if you purchase a six or 12-month plan. This isn’t as long as the regular 90-day money-back guarantee that InMotion uses for the rest of their hosting options, but it’s still great compared to many other providers on the market, who often offer no money-back guarantees for their dedicated hosting packages.

Final Thoughts

We’d easily recommend the dedicated server options if you have a serious online business or run several high-traffic websites and can’t afford to share resources. The managed hosting additions are also recommended given the monitoring and launch assistance bonuses that come with the package; it’s nice that you get to try this for free no matter which subscription you pick.

InMotion Server Performance

Average Review Score
★★★★★
★★★★★

To test InMotion’s hosting performance we used a few Pingdom reports. Over the span of a year, Pingdom’s probes (located across North America) performed daily checks, on a basic website (less than 100KBs) hosted on InMotion’s shared server environment. Additionally, there was no throttling added to these checks, so slower response times can be expected for 3G or 4G connections.

Yearly Server Performance:

  • Average Uptime

    100.00%

  • Average Response Time

    0.00ms

  • Monthly Downtime

    No Downtime

Server performance can affect all aspects of your site. Case studies have consistently found that customer wait times (page load and response times) directly affect everything from SEM, revenue, and traffic growth. By a lot too, here’s just one example:

For Mobify, every 100ms decrease in homepage load speed worked out to a 1.11% increase in session-based conversion, yielding an average annual revenue increase of nearly $380,000.

Security

InMotion Hosting’s security offerings are pretty good across their different plan options and subscription packages.

For instance, they offer free SSL certification for many of their plans, including their shared hosting, reseller, and their dedicated hosting plans. These come from Comodo rather than the source other providers normally use: Let’s Encrypt.

They also provide firewalls and malware protection for all of their packages based on their home servers. For their WordPress hosting plans, you also get additional firewalls and security options via the Jetpack add-on, which comes included with most of the WordPress plans.

Multilayer site security is included for their reseller plans, along with free dedicated I.P. addresses. PositiveSSL certification is also included with the reseller plans, which provide better than average insurance if the SSL encryption is ever broken.

For their dedicated plans, most of the security is provided through cPanel, including security advisors and encryption tools. The dedicated plans also come with multilayer site security and automatic updates for added peace of mind; these shields protect from DDoS and malware attacks like.

We’d also reiterate that you get automatic backups with all of InMotion’s hosting plans, regardless of the pricing tier. Only some of the plans get the “Snapshot” add-on, though, which provides more detailed backups for your site for a 7-day timeframe. Still, having backups altogether is a big plus, and not all providers offer it as a freebie. WordPress plans get even more backup functionality through Jetpack, too.

Customer Support Review

Many of InMotion Hosting’s plans offer free 24/7 customer support through a variety of channels. Most of your customer service queries can be submitted to their live chat system, which should connect to an agent within a couple of minutes.

All of their customers can also benefit from their support center, which has a host of over 500 articles that can help you solve any technical issues you might experience with your subscription or server. They even have a YouTube channel you can browse for additional troubleshooting needs!

Other customer service avenues include email support or by calling their designated helpline. Both options normally provide rapid responses (a few minutes for phone and less than an hour for an email in either case).

Furthermore, many of the plans, like the WordPress plans or some of the VPS, reseller, or dedicated plans, include managed hosting, which comes with access to a technical team that can help you with even more detailed problems or questions. All in all, InMotion Hosting’s customer support is thorough and responsive. There are so many ways to submit a ticket or query that you shouldn’t have any trouble solving a problem.
