Understanding the Customizer in Your WordPress Dashboard

The WordPress Dashboard Customizer is a newer feature you can use to work within your WordPress theme. This option is found under the Appearance tab and provides an easy way for even a beginner to get started with website design.

Once you click on the Customize option, you will be taken to a page that looks like this:

Of course, the way it looks will vary depending on your theme. The options you have in the WordPress Customizer will also vary, but some will be the same from one theme to another. Here’s a rundown of all the basic options you will find within the WordPress Customizer.

WordPress Customizer-Active Theme

Active Theme

The active theme option allows you to change your current theme from the customizer. If you click the “Change” button, you will be able to select from any themes you have installed on your site right in the sidebar.

You can click on the theme to get a live preview and when you find the one you want, you can make it your new active theme.

Site Identity

The Site Identity option will allow you to change the site title, tagline and site icon. You can also decide if you want to display header text.

Colors

Colors

When you click on the Colors option, you will be able to choose a base color scheme, background color, color for the header and sidebar text and a color for the header and sidebar background. Your options under the Colors option may be different, depending on the theme you are using. Regardless, this is where you can customize the colors of your website.

All you have to do to change a color is click on “Select Color” and choose from the color selector. If you want to use a specific color, you can use the hex code and use a color picker to find out the hex code of the specific color you want to use.

The Header Image option will allow you to change or set the image for your header. It will also give you a recommended size for the header image. If you are creating your own image, this is important to check the size before you create the image.

Background Image

If you want to use an image as your background, this is where you can choose that image. Just click on the “Select Image” option and you can select the image you want to use as your background from your computer.

Menus

The menus option in the WordPress Customizer is the same as the regular menus option in WordPress. You can add and edit your menus from this section.

Widgets

The widgets option allows you to edit any widget area you have set within your theme. This option will give you an option for each widget area and you can add, edit or delete widgets in each area.

Static Front Page

The static front page option will allow you to switch the setting, just like you would under Reading in the Settings section of your WordPress Dashboard. You can choose between displaying your latest blog posts or using a static page as your home page.

These are all of the basic options found within the WordPress Customizer. Many themes provide other options within this section to make it even easier to customize the look of your website.
